Teegan’s New Adventure: A Retired Sled Dog’s Journey To Her Forever Home

Retired Sled Dog With New Family

Adopting a retired sled dog is more than just bringing home a pet. It’s welcoming a seasoned adventurer, a loyal companion, and a dog with a story to tell. For Teegan, a former Snowy Owl sled dog, retirement meant trading in the snowy mountain trails for a warm home and a life filled with new experiences. In February 2024, Teegan found her perfect match in Edmonton, where she now enjoys an active life with her new family.

Teegan’s adoptors, experienced dog owners, had always shared her life with northern breeds like Siberian Huskies and Malamutes. After saying goodbye to their beloved Malamute Mikko five months prior, their family knew they were ready to open their hearts to another special dog.

The adoption process was a family affair. Rose, her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren were all involved in selecting Teegan, making multiple visits to Snowy Owl to ensure she was the right match. The moment they met Teegan, they knew she was special.

“We were excited to visit the Snowy Owl kennel, meet the potential adoptees, and find the right fit for our family. We found that.” Rose shared.

Adopting a retired sled dog was a natural choice. Having been involved in animal rescue for years, Teegan’s new owner understood the unique appeal of a mature, experienced dog. “We’ve fostered puppies and younger dogs, but there’s something special about an adult dog who has led an active lifestyle and is comfortable with people and other dogs.” Given her love for outdoor adventures like running, skijoring, and biking, a retired sled dog seemed like the perfect companion. Still energetic but not requiring the intense exercise of a younger pup.

“I have always run with my dogs and done skijoring, but I can no longer keep up with the 20+ miles a week that my younger dogs needed to burn off their energy. An older dog just seemed like the right fit,” Rose told us.

Teegan quickly settled into her new home, proving how adaptable and loving retired sled dogs can be. She adores being around people and has a natural affinity for children, making her an excellent fit for the family. Her new life includes plenty of time exploring off-leash trails in the river valley, skijoring, and even mountain biking—where she loves to show off her speed, especially uphill! True to her sled dog roots, Teegan never misses the chance to plop into a good mud puddle along the way.

Adjusting to a home environment came with a few learning curve balls, but Teegan tackled each new experience with enthusiasm. One of her first challenges was mastering the stairs—something that took just a few hours before she was confidently zooming up and down them. She also learned how to walk with a loose lead, though she still finds bunnies irresistible! Over time, Teegan has grown more comfortable around new people and has even come to love car rides.

“I appreciate the due diligence that Snowy Owl takes with adoptions and their care for their dogs. I’ve let my contacts in the rescue world know that I have a great dog that I chose to adopt from Snowy Owl,” Rose said.

Teegan’s story is just one example of how rewarding it can be to adopt a retired sled dog. These incredible dogs give so much throughout their working years, and in return, they deserve a loving home where they can thrive in retirement. Thanks to Snowy Owl, Teegan has found exactly that, a place where she can run, play, and soak up the sunshine, just as she did back at the kennel.

Teegan’s family has just one advice for anyone considering adoption: “Absolutely do it! These dogs have so much love to give, and they make the best companions.”

The Snowy Owl Sled Dog Adoption Program is dedicated to finding the perfect match for these incredible athletes, ensuring they live their golden years with families who appreciate their history, energy, and spirit.
