We’re thrilled to share the heartwarming story of Rebel, one of our beloved retired sled dogs, who has found a forever home with a former Snowy Owl employee, Maria Posadas. Rebel, a Canadian Indian and Siberian Husky cross born in 2014, was part of the “Trouble Makers” litter and has always had a special spark. She was an outstanding sled dog, and it brings us immense joy to know she’s found a family who truly understands the unique qualities that make sled dogs so extraordinary.
Maria first met Rebel during her summer season at Snowy Owl, where she quickly grew fond of her. As Maria reflects on what made Rebel stand out from the pack, she says, “Rebel was such a sweet girl and she has this little quirk that when you pet her, she pets you back by pawing you. I thought it was the cutest thing and we quickly bonded!” Maria’s connection with Rebel was instant, and over the course of the summer, it became clear that their bond was something special. Rebel’s smart, playful nature shone through, and Maria couldn’t resist the idea of bringing her home.
Maria adopted Rebel in late August, right as her contract with Snowy Owl ended. “We love the company and she gets along really well with our dog. She is so sweet and brings so much energy into the house!” Rebel’s transition to her new home was seamless, and it’s clear that she’s quickly become an integral part of the family. Her ability to get along with other dogs has made her a perfect fit, and Maria speaks fondly of how much joy Rebel brings into their lives.
Since moving into her new home, Rebel has learned a lot of new skills. “Since living with Rebel, she’s learned how to fetch and play with toys. She discovered her love for squeaky toys and never stops playing with them. She also learned how to go up and down stairs and watching her learn was so cute. She never stopped trying to figure it out until she got it!” It’s heartwarming to see Rebel enjoying a more relaxed life after her sledding days, embracing the little things like squeaky toys and mastering new tricks.
Of course, adopting a retired sled dog comes with its unique challenges. Maria admits that there was a small adjustment to make in terms of Rebel’s shedding. “It did mostly! I was so used to working with them outside, I forgot how much of their hair clings to everything inside the house!!” But beyond the fur, Rebel has exceeded all of Maria’s expectations. “She is so gentle and kind and super active!” Maria’s love for Rebel is evident, and it’s clear that the bond between them is built on mutual respect and understanding.
As one of Snowy Owl’s extraordinary dogs, Rebel’s story is a beautiful reminder of the deep connections that can form between humans and sled dogs. She’s not just a retired athlete; she’s a family member who brings love, energy, and joy into every moment. We’re so grateful that Rebel is getting the chance to enjoy a happy, fulfilling life with Maria, and we couldn’t be more excited for the adventures they’ll share together.
Welcome to your new life, Rebel! We’re so glad you’ve found the perfect home. To learn more about our sled dog adoption program, click here.
