For Kim, Kevin, and Gray Mayberry-Hjertaas of Banff, adopting a retired sled dog was a familiar and heartfelt choice. After the loss of their beloved Lightning—adopted in 2018 at age 10 and cherished until she passed at 16—they knew their home had room for another Husky Hero.
In October 2024, they welcomed Nickel, a retired sled dog known for her quiet, gentle nature.
Finding the Right Fit
“We’ve had a Husky Hero before. Her name was Lightning. We adopted her in 2018 when she was 10 and she lived to be 16. Sadly, she passed away this past Spring. We liked the Snowy Owl program and love all the dogs so we were happy to adopt again,” Kim shared.
What the family appreciates most about the Husky Hero Adoption Program is how it allows adopters to truly understand the dog’s personality before committing.
“You get to know the dog’s personality before you make the commitment to adopt which is very important to us as we needed a quiet dog,” Kim said. “Nickel is super gentle and very quiet.”
Life with Nickel
Nickel may be retired, but she’s far from slowing down. “Walks, walks, and walks! HAHA!” Kim laughed when asked about Nickel’s favourite activities. “She also likes cuddles, going to the offleash park and bouncing. She is like Tigger on walks—always bouncing around!”
The transition into home life has come with impressive progress. “She’s learned stairs. She learned that really quickly,” Kim noted. “She also has learned how to be super good at walking on a leash. She hardly pulls at all and is very mindful and always looks back to make sure you’re right behind her.”
A Fantastic Program
When asked whether adopting a retired sled dog met their expectations, Kim didn’t hesitate: “Yes! It’s a fantastic program and we are so grateful to own a Husky Hero!!!!”
Nickel’s story is a heartwarming reminder of the joy and companionship that come from giving these hardworking dogs the retirement they deserve. Through walks, cuddles, and quiet companionship, Nickel has found not just a home—but a family who loves her for exactly who she is.
