An Old Dog With New Tricks: Khaki’s Adoption Story

Khaki Adoption Story

Recently, we had the pleasure of catching up with one of our retired husky heroes, Khaki, and today we’re sharing her story. Khaki was a beloved member of the Snowy Owl pack before she retired, and we kicked off the search to find her the perfect forever home to enjoy her golden years. Thankfully, Dave, his wife Stacey, and their two kids, Ariya and Paige, fell in love with our sweet girl, and she’s found herself in a home that is essentially every dog’s dream come true.

“We wanted to share a quick update on Khaki, whom we adopted from Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours in February 2024. Since joining our family, she’s settled in seamlessly and become an integral part of our home,” Dave told us. “Khaki’s a real gem—friendly, easygoing, and always wearing a smile. Life on our acreage suits her perfectly. She spends her days happily watching the horses, mingling with the cats, and hanging out with our chickens. Plus, she’s made fast friends with the neighbour’s dog, who’s a frequent visitor.”

Dave and his family live in Crossfield, Alberta. Beyond their family of four, they’ve for 30 chickens, 3 cats, 3 horses, a pony, a donkey, and now, they’ve got Khaki.

They joined us in the winter of 2022 for a Sled Dog Tour, and, according to Dave, they had wanted to bring home a sled dog ever since. They love “getting to teach an old dog new tricks.” For example, Khaki has learned to live life 100% off leash and free-range on the farm where she hasn’t seen a leash in months. While retired sled dogs are used to routine and life in the harness, they get a lot of free run and fun at the Kennel, so we couldn’t imagine a more suited life for Khaki in her retirement.

Since becoming a member of her new family, Khaki has come to love watching the chickens (Dave is convinced she’s decided on what colour chicken would taste the best), but it seems that our girl has also learned some serious self-control. She’s always a huge fan of staring at her reflection in the dishwasher (imagine seeing a dishwasher for the first time in retirement; you’d be pretty mesmerized, too!), and she loves dancing, specifically in the hallway at 2 am. We love that for her, and we love that for her new family.

“We’re so grateful to Snowy Owl for entrusting us with Khaki in her golden years. She’s brought so much joy and love into our lives, and we feel incredibly lucky to have her,” Dave told us. He noted that adopting a retired sled dog for Snowy Owl has absolutely exceeded his expectations. In fact, his daughters already have their eye on their next family member: “Ariya and Paige ask me every week if Brie is ready to retire yet!”
