Adoption Update with Husky Hero, Tommy

Your name and the name of your beloved husky hero!

We are the Smethurst’s; Blair, Amy, Mary, and Nolan. We adopted Tommy. Who is now known as Tomster the Mobster or Thomas Theodore Fluffybutt the 3rd.

Where do you live?

Medicine Hat, Alberta.

When did you adopt your retired sled dog?

At the end of June, we drove up to get Tommy for our sleepover. And within a few days, we decided to adopt him. He quickly fit in with our family. It became official mid-July.

Describe your family, partner, kids, and other animals.

We’re a busy, active family of 4. Blair is a nurse, Amy is a teacher, and Mary and Nolan are in high school and junior high. We love adventuring, hiking, camping, and fishing. But also enjoy a good D&D session, Magic, board game night, or watching a movie. We also are avid reptile lovers. We have 5 snakes and 3 geckos.

What motivated you to adopt a retired sled dog?

In December our family decided to do an experience instead of presents. We decided on dog sledding. After a lot of research on different companies and who would give us the best experience, we decided on Snowy Owl. We loved our experience and we still talk about it. We then found out that the company retired their dogs to loving homes. And we decided that maybe we could be a good fit.

What do you love most about having an adoptee sled dog join your family?

Tommy is such a calming influence with his mild manner. He is also a goofball at random times of the day which is always a good time. He is also very polite with all new people and animals. He turns heads wherever we go. We are asked all the time if he is part coyote or wolf.

What 3 activities does your adoptee enjoy the most?

He loves his walks, being near his two-legged friends, and being a proficient couch potato.

What new skills did your husky hero learn since living with you?

Tommy has learned all sorts of new skills! Such as, stairs are not scary, how to sit, lay down, wait, not chase after bunnies (sometimes), and most importantly how not to pee on the carpet.

Did adopting a retired sled dog meet all your expectations?

Adopting Tommy has been a wonderful experience. We have had older dogs in the past but none of them have been as energetic or able to fit into our family’s lifestyle. The adoption process was so amazing to be a part of because we felt we were truly able to pick the husky hero that was a perfect fit for us. The staff was also so helpful and always willing to answer any questions we had. We would say that adopting our husky hero exceeded our expectations
