Meet retired husky hero Piper in this edition of the Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours ‘Adoption Update’.
What’s Your Name and the Name of Your Husky Hero?
My name is Tia and my husky hero is Piper
Where Do You Live?
We just moved to a house three rows up from Blackstrap Lake in Shields, Saskatchewan over Christmas!
When Did You Adopt Your Dog Piper?
I adopted Piper in April, 2020 just as Covid-19 restrictions were setting in. I made the drive from Saskatoon to Canmore and back (17hrs) in one day.
Who Does Your Husky Share a Home With?
Piper and I live with my wonderful boyfriend Patrick and his two dogs June and Mina. Patrick is a dog lover who enjoys the outdoors, especially dirt biking or snowboarding. June is a sweetheart Shepherd-Retriever mix who is often referred to as ‘the most well-behaved dog I’ve ever met’ by people who meet her. And finally, Mina is a 7lb Chihuahua who will absolutely try and put her tongue in your mouth or your nose if you are not paying attention.
What Motivated You to Adopt a Retired Sled Dog?
After spending the 2017-2018 winter season working as a guide at Snowy Owl, I knew I wanted to adopt a husky hero one day, specifically Piper. After work, I would bring her in with me for sleepovers on my kennel nights, and then wake up in the morning to my socks hidden all around the cabin and a cute dog snuggled right up to me. The day she came up for adoption I was thrilled to put in an application.
What Does Your Family Love Most About Having a Husky Hero Join Your Home?
I have loved watching her enjoy her retirement and experience new things. Piper is a nervous dog, and I am so lucky that I get to see the silly and confident sides of her come forward as she relaxes and settles into retired life.
What 3 Activities Does Piper Enjoy the Most?
- Zooming around the dog park
- Swimming in the lake
- Hiding socks all around the house
What New Skills Has Your Husky Hero Learned Since Living With You?
Since living with me, Piper has done a lot of swimming, camping, and hiking. We have been working on basic commands and she is learning to be more comfortable around new people. She has come such a long way with her confidence, and I see it building all the time. She has also learned that the whipped cream on top of Starbucks drinks is the ultimate treat to sneak a taste of when I am not looking. We are hoping to try Skijoring together in the upcoming weeks and enjoying the lake life this summer!
Did Adopting Piper Meet Your Expectations?
Yes, I have loved every minute of it and would absolutely adopt another husky hero one day. Piper is such a sweet dog, and I am so lucky to have her as a part of my family.
