Adoption Update: Torque & His New Pack

We’ve got another adoption update for you! As you know, our retired sled dogs are put up for adoption, and we have the honour of helping them find forever homes once they hang up their harnesses. Not only are we fortunate to really get to know the families who take our former pack members home, but we’re lucky to get updates from them so we can hear all about how our retirees are doing.

Today, we’re sharing an update from Torque, a former Snowy Owl sled dog who was adopted in October 2023 and is now living in Calgary. Torque’s new family includes an energetic dad and daughter duo who are over the moon to have him. Torque’s new dad and 7-year-old companion spend a ton of time outdoors, and they knew he’d complement their lives perfectly.

“I took a dog sledding tour at Snowy Owl back in 2011, and I learned a lot about how amazing you guys were with your love for dogs and your transparency in animal care. I also learned about the different breeds of huskies and the great adoption program,” Torque’s new family member told us. “My husky Koda was 14 years old when he passed away in August of 2023. I knew I wanted another husky at some point, but I didn’t want a puppy per se. Because I had been following Snowy Owl for years on social media, I kept it in the back of my mind that your adoption program might be a good opportunity to give a sled dog a nice retirement home.”

Torque has brought those “loving husky traits” back into their home. “He talks more than my previous husky did. I’m reminded every day that his fun-loving social attitude came from being a part of Snowy Owl’s Family. Torque Loves to go to the off leash park and play with all the other dogs.”

Torque’s favourite pastimes include: “on-leash walks where he sniffs and pees on almost everything he smells, howling and talking to other dogs to welcome them to the dog park, and bell and butt scratches.”

Since being adopted, he’s become a pretty good walked on-leash and has also learned to escape out of his new back yard, his owner told us with a laugh. The pup learns fast!

Reflecting on the experience, Torque’s owner told us: “It’s interesting; I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s created more time for me to be present with him. Some sled dogs need specific training and attention to help them adjust to pet life – this awareness has provided me with opportunities to teach him and set him up for an awesome retired life.”

He continued to say “Torque is such a gentleman. He still has a playful side even though he’s 10-years-old. I love watching him rip around and talk and play with the other dogs. He seems to really connect with other huskies at the park. Grateful to have him join our pack!
