Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours is very distinctive when compared to most touring companies within our sled dog industry. Anyone can go for a sled dog ride while their guide drives the dog team, overshadowing the entire experience. With Snowy Owl everyone has the opportunity to share in a dog sledding excursion on many levels, providing a more exclusive opportunity for our guests! We are one of the few companies in Canada who specialize in providing our visitors with the thrill of driving their very own dog team along with their family or friends, following closely behind an experienced instructor! Our team demonstrates and provides a 30 minute instruction on how to drive your team before you hit the trail naturally! This is why our sled configurations and programs are individually designed than those who provide only the option of driving with a guide. There is simply no comparison and absolutely, the option of driving your own dog sled team immediately increases the value of your overall experience however, our prices are often comparable to those who only promote guided sleds. Sled configurations are something to take into consideration when making a reservation. At Snowy Owl we believe our options will help you Harness your Dreams creating a custom, personal experience!
How many people can go on one sled? We’re happy you asked! There are reasons we place 3 people per sleigh:
To ensure the highest quality care for our husky heroes, we provide a proper run/rest ratio which is working one day and enjoying the next day off, for example. This means we are limit the number of sleds we bring up each day.
Since we do not offer a guide per sleigh, our guest driven sleds have capacity for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 small children. Our guest driven sleds cannot exceed 500lbs and our instructor driven sleds have a weight limit of 370lbs. This is to ensure that we are very careful not to over work or take advantage of our husky heroes.
Our dog sledding site is located 18kms from our kennel which means we only transport the number of dogs needed to accommodate the needs for the day. Bringing additional dogs unnecessarily only means they have to sit in their travel boxes when they could be enjoying their day off in the kennel. As we always say, respect given is respect received and because we do not compromise the well being of our dogs you enjoy a lovable, happy, friendly pack!
“But we are a group of 2, not 3!” That’s ok! We have a few options for you to choose from: First, we need to figure out if you would like to drive your own team or if you would like to go with an instructor. If you choose to drive or ride with an instructor then they will become the 3rd person on the sled. If you would like to drive your own team and are ok with the possibility of having a 3rd person seated with you, then the single person becomes your 3rd person. If you choose to drive your own team and do not want a 3rd person (so no chance of an instructor or single joining you) then you can opt to upgrade to our Gold Package which means exclusivity for the 2 of you on since you have now paid to have the 3rd seat.
“But there is a company that says they do not charge extra just to have 2 people exclusively on one sled “ If this company offers only a guide per sleigh and no other option then unfortunately your experience is no longer exclusive. To us exclusive means just your group on your sled – no one else! The experience of driving your own dog team with just the 2 of you on the sled is the ultimate experience. Remember, our Gold Package is designed for those who want to drive their OWN sled.
Snowy Owl’s Gold Package: Specifically designed for those who wish to experience the thrill of driving their very own dog team, guaranteeing only 2 guests per sled. Additionally, any size group of guests can invest in our convicted Gold Packages. For example, if everyone in the family of 5 wishes to drive their own team, we would configure 3 guests driving their own sled, then the remaining 2 can up grade to our Gold Package so they too can drive their own sled.
Snowy Owl’s Platinum Package: Designed for the ultimate experience and thrill seeker! Created for those who would like to drive a dog team on their own following their instructor!
Experience says it all! “Experience Real!”
Below are examples of what Snowy Owl considers safe, comfortable and ethical in reference to sled configurations! We have allowed our special guests to drive our very well trained sled dog teams for almost 30 years with great success in all areas; including safety and the humane treatment of our husky heroes. In the photos below you can see that our custom, weather-proof sled bags are easily done up securely which is our policy, keeping our guests safe inside as well as warm and comfortable. The added warmth of our Pendleton blankets is pure luxury! You can also see that our guests have enough space to move around and enjoy their ride as opposed to being crammed into a sled, causing bulging on the sides where your body could be prone to dragging on the ground over the sled runners. When we do allow 4 guests riding on one sled, we will only allow 2 adults and 2 small children as in photo #2, who have a combined weight of up to 500 lbs., driving their own sled following directly behind and in view of our professional instructors on each tour. Also shown in photo #4 is our signature GOLD package which accommodates only 2 guests exclusively on 1 sled, following their instructors closely along our fantastic, well groomed trail systems. This is the most popular choice within our program offerings for couples and is certainly guaranteed as the ultimate in providing a superior hands on experience! Our company also provides service to solo travellers at no extra charge as we do not consider them “strangers” at all, nor do the majority of our other participating guests. In fact, on the contrary, our guests suggest sharing is an excellent way to meet some very great people.

In these photos below you can see how little room there would be with 4-5 adults on one sled. The sled bag cannot close due to the number of people in the sled which is not only dangerous for guests
riding in the sled, but note there is nothing protecting the guests from the elements such as winter winds and snow. Obviously our company does not practice the implications of photos “A” and “B” and it was challenging even to show examples of what an overloaded sled looks like. At Snowy Owl we provide you with the customer service and care you deserve – the concept of overloading sleds in order to generate more income for less service does not exist in our company. Our company simply offers you more adventurous options and security which is just one more reason our important guests return year after year!
Can you imagine paying approx. $153.00 per adult or any money at all for a tour that will be uncomfortable, slow and hard on the dogs? Even on a flat surfaced trail this would be a challenge for the dogs, now lets add large hills on mountain terrain!
