Winter Courses

Are you ready to Unleash the Musher Within?

At Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours we offer our expertise and training services to assist you in training your dog to become a sled dog for skijoring or if you are planning to have a recreational team of your own sometime in the future!  We promote only ethical dog care and dog sledding so our approach is kind, gentle and compassionate – just like when we train our own husky heroes!

The 1st course will be offered on Tuesday, March 12th 2013 and Wednesday, March 13th 2013. If you are interested and would like to make a reservation or have any questions please contact us!

Day 1:
8:00am to 12:00pm – Classroom.  This is where we teach breed history and the culture and sport of dog sledding.  We go over proper trail use, safety, equipment, training and nutrition.

12:00pm to 12:15 – Quick snack break

12:15pm to 1:00pm – Drive up to our dog sledding site

1:00pm to 1:30pm – Equipment overview and harnessing our teams.  Also teaching your dog proper etiquette while we wait to hook up our teams.

1:30pm to 3:30pm – Dog sledding with your dog in a team (10kms loop with as many rests as needed for your dog)

3:30pm to 4:00pm – Resting our teams and your dog – water and snacking the dogs and of course the 2-elgged folks as well!

4:00pm to 4:15pm -  Hooking up teams for another run

4:15pm to 5:30pm – Dog sledding with your dog in team (10kms loop with as many rests as needed for your dog)

5:30pm – If you have any questions you would like to go over we can take some time to do so and we will show you some stretches for your dog before leaving!

Day 2:

Meet at our dog sledding site for 9:00am.  9:00am to 5:00pm or 5:30pm we will be covering our ½ day trail – 24kms loop at the pace of your dog.  We will be stopping for lunch (fireside).  This gives you the opportunity to see what your dog can do and of course, the feeling of taking your dog in the back country.  We will teach you safety and awareness for using trails that are less travelled on and of course our natural environment.  If we finish this loop in good time we can rest your dog for an 1hr to 30mins and go out again for a short 10kms loop.
*This day is also dependent on snow and ice conditions.  If we do not have enough snow on our longer trails or the ice it not safe to travel on then I will need to reschedule the course for mid Januray.*

Depending on your dog’s ability – we will give he/she the chance to run in the leadership position and of course assist your dog with whatever they need.  Our training approach is compassionate and relaxed – we do everything at your owns dog pace with respect to he/she to ensure their positive response to their dog sled training.

Price:  $149.00 for the first day and $385.00 for the second day.  Additional person: $200.00 a day and for an additional dog $250.00 a day.
